Dialogue Hikes

9-hours of facilitated and sustained dialogue with a consistent community of peers, while on 2-4 mile group hikes in various regional parks. Pack a lunch! We ask that participants please plan to join us for all 4 hikes in a given program's series to help us build trust and community with each other.

Based on the common text, Black Faces, White Spaces by Carolyn Finney.

Session 1 - Socialization and the Racialized Outdoors

As a full group, dialogue participants will dive more deeply into Chapters 1-2 while learning more about the cycle of socialization and liberation. We will flesh out personal timelines of our various racialized histories with the outdoors and discuss these moments of socialization from our past and present in pairs.

Session 2 - Representation, Intersectionality and Personal Agency

In small groups, dialogue participants will discuss times when they personally experienced, perpetuated or disrupted instances of racial oppression. We will also dialogue as a whole group about our individual roles as gatekeepers to greater representation in the outdoors while referencing Chapters 3-4. Each participant will complete a social identity profile to inform dialogue about the intersectional awareness and work required to dismantle dominant ideas of a “white wilderness.”

Session 3 - Action Planning

This final session is dedicated to brainstorming individual action plans for each person’s various spheres of influence. Using insights and examples from Chapters 5-6, we will engage in peer feedback sessions on action plan draft ideas and share action intentions with the full group. This is also the time and space for coalition building amongst this group’s participants before the experience concludes.
